[Akame Apartment]
He sighed, sitting amidst mountains of boxes. He stared at the barren apartment, trying not to give in to the ache in his heart. He had lived here for over four years, alongside Jin, but he had also visited this apartment for two years prior. So many memories were trapped within the walls of the apartment.
Their first Christmas exchange had been here, right where he sat in the living room. That had proven to produce their first argument, quickly amended with a heart-warming confession and excited celebrations of their gifts. He fingered the bracelet, smiling at the memory. The idiot still cherished that jersey too, always claiming it was one of his most treasured items.
The first time he met Jin’s parents; them paying a surprise visit to their oldest between their romp around India and their first safari in the Congo. He still remembered Hiromi’s expression when Jin had stammered out an explanation, introducing a boyfriend for the first time to his parents. The woman had been so overjoyed he had immediately been enveloped in a warm hug, tiny tears dotting the shoulder of his shirt, as the elegant woman kissed his cheeks happily. Hitoshi had clapped him on the back before pulling him in for a hug, it was then he learned where Jin got his constant need for affection and touch.
Too many memories and while he wasn’t sure if he would ever stop missing their place of origin he knew he wanted to move on to the new phase in their life. The move would have been made months before if Jin hadn’t demanded that they wait until they were at least married before moving into their new home.
“The house represents our lives as a married couple, I want it to mark a new phase,” Jin had babbled worriedly, “So let’s wait, alright?”
And even after the wedding, right at the beginning of the New Year abroad, Jin had found another reason for them to wait, yet again.
“I know we agreed that we’d move after the wedding but we haven’t decided on furniture and… just the remodeling of the bathrooms and the new flooring is going on. I want it to be perfect, because that’s what you deserve, your perfect house to come home to,” Jin had bit his lip, worried about how his husband would react.
And he had agreed, no matter how stupid it had seemed at the time. He didn’t mind if the house wasn’t perfection immediately but the thought was cute and he would do anything to keep that beautiful smile on Jin’s face.
And so they had spent countless weekends comparing hardwood flooring and tiles. That was followed by finding the perfect furniture for all the rooms, both arguing over whether they should or shouldn’t furnish the rooms reserved for their potential children. Jin had been adamant at first about furnishing the rooms before the next day pointing out they didn’t know if they would be allowed to adopt or the age of the children. But when he had discovered all the beautiful cradles and children’s beds he couldn’t help but argue with Jin, wanting to furnish the rooms himself. Finally, after endless pouting and glares they decided to wait.
Then had come planning for the yard, what should they do with the extra space? Finally after consulting landscapers they would go simple and alter as needed if and when the time came.
He started when the phone rang, “hello?”
“Akanishi-san,” came the reply, he couldn’t help but blush at the change in last name, “there is a moving company here, shall I let them up?”
“Oh yes, I’m expecting them, thank you,” he stood up to weave his way through the maze of boxes.
[The Next Day]
[Akame House]
Jin held his hands over Kame’s eyes, carefully walking him up the steps and through the front door.
“Jin,” Kame sighed tiredly.
“Alright, you can look,” he took his hands away and smiled as Kame looked around.
He hadn’t been allowed into the house since the initial remodeling had started. He took in everything before his eyes stopped, instantly drawn to a basket with a giant bow on a table directly across from the front doors.
“What is that?” he looked at Jin curiously.
“Go see,” Jin grinned and pushed him forward.
Kame hesitantly looked into the basket, confused by the blue blanket draped over something. He tugged it down and barely contained a squeal.
“Puppies?” his eyes lit up upon sight of the five puppies, all tiny and asleep in the basket, “you got puppies? Are we keeping all of them?”
“Well I intended only to get two when I went to pick them out a few weeks ago,” Jin played with the ear of a chocolate colored dachshund, “but I saw these five and I couldn’t leave any of them behind. They’re part of your birthday present.”
“Why are you so perfect?” Kame asked, poking the other lightly, “you always do something like this and leave me feeling horribly inadequate.”
“What? What, what, what?” Jin started, “Don’t say that! Especially when it’s not true and it’s your birthday. You always do amazing things for me on my birthday and holidays. Besides, this is a bit self-serving. It gets us partway through the life plan I have for us. Married, check. Beautiful house, check. Dogs. Check. Now all we need are Hibiki and…”
“Jay,” Kame corrected, tightening his hold on the other’s arm to painful levels, “I thought I told you we were naming him Jay, no arguments. Cause then he won’t wonder why he has a Japanese name and not a foreign one like Jennifer. Hibiki can be his middle name, remember?”
“Alright, then all we need is Jason Hibiki and Jennifer Hotaru,” he smiled, “and our ‘And they lived happily ever after’.”
Kame smiled, “So have you named them or do I get to?”
“I named two of them, you name the rest,” Jin smiled, “This is Ten and this is Pin…” he pointed the two sleeping dogs out.
Kame picked up the third dog, it blinked sleepily at him before licking his nose. Kame smiled, “Hello Ran. Play with your brothers now,” he set Ran back down and picked up the fourth dog and grinned, “And you get to be Jerry.”
“Jerry?” Jin tilted his head.
“Think about it,” Kame grinned, “name the fifth puppy, Jin.”
“But I want you to,” Jin frowned.
“You picked them out so you get to,” Kame rolled his eyes.
“Maru then.” Jin stroked the fifth puppy’s ears.
“How are we going to take care of five dogs? I have to be at the school constantly and you the office,” Kame frowned.
“We don’t have to train them, as soon as I picked them out I got them into obedience school. And I can always come during lunch breaks, I mean we’re not too far from the office. And on the days I can’t… well you know how we interviewed to have a housekeeper come help since we’d both be busy? I made sure the candidates were willing to help with dogs and the one you liked the best, well she’ll be coming three days during the week. Which is perfect because the other two days I can come home, and you don’t work weekends…” Jin rambled.
“How much planning have you put into all of this?” Kame asked with wide eyes.
“This has to be perfect!” Jin exclaimed, “Our house has to be perfect for you so of course. And it wasn’t bad, I’m used to planning constantly at work so…”
“You suck,” Kame sighed, “But I love you too much and I want to take them into the yard and play with them.”
“Of course,” Jin moved to pick up the basket, easily waking the other slumbering dogs up with the move out into the backyard.
Jin was content to watch him playing with the puppies, absolutely ecstatic with the tiny darlings. After half an hour he took his seat next to Jin, Ran cradled in his arms. Ten, Jerry, Maru, and Pin were all sprawled about the yard, exhausted from playing so much with their limited puppy energy.
He leaned over and nibbled on Jin’s lower lip before moving closer and deepening the kiss. He arched an eyebrow when Jin embarrassedly pushed him away.
“Why are you embarrassed? There’s no one here with us and the trees keep our neighbors from seeing into the yard,” Kame sighed.
“Not in front of Ran,” Jin meekly answered, pointing to the tired but barely awake puppy watching him from Kame’s arms.
Kame chuckled, setting Ran down in the grass, “Ran doesn’t care, Jin,” he murmured before wrapping an arm around Jin’s neck and pressing another kiss onto Jin’s lips.
