Summary: Sweet Devotion!Kame makes a little mistake with his engagement ring.
A/N:  This is in response to [livejournal.com profile] sweetpaopuwind requesting drabble continuations of Sweet Devotion.  She requested a fic where Kame lost a piece of important jewelry and freaks out.  I wanted to write him losing a SUPER important piece of jewelry too so I decided to write it.  You don’t NEED to have read Sweet Devotion to understand/appreciate this but it’s suggested so you know the back-story (especially for this one because it continues directly after Sweet Devotion).
Note: This is set DIRECTLY after Sweet Devotion, and will probably be confusing if you haven’t read it.
Note 2: This is part of my triple post for my birthday and Kame's birthday!  Kame is 24 today and I'm 19 today!  Whoo~ 亀梨和也へお誕生日おめでとうございます!

[Kindergarten]

Kame saw the last of the children off with their parents, calling out a final ‘travel safe’ before heading back to the classroom.  He groaned at the sight of paint splattered on the desks.

“Ready to start?” Junno chuckled at his expression.

“Yeah,” Kame worked the engagement ring off his finger and set it on the desk.  He smiled at it briefly before starting to organize the room

“You’re taking it off?” Junno blinked.

“I don’t want to get anything on it,” Kame explained.

[One Hour Later]

Kame wiped his forehead on his sleeve, smiling at the clean and organized room.  He went back to his desk to collect his things.

He picked up his phone on the first ring, “Hello?”

“Kazu!” Cried the voice on the other end, “Jin just told me the news!  I’m so happy you said yes!”

“Ah Reiko, hi,” he answered embarrassedly.

“You can call me mum now, just like Jin,” she answered, “You don’t know how happy we were.  When we were in Japan two months ago Jin came to ask Hitoshi for the rings.  We’ve been waiting for this day for so long.  It was only a matter of time before he asked you to marry him, we knew.”

Kame blinked, “what do you mean he asked for the rings?”

“He told you the story right?  It’s so romantic,” she paused and received no answer, “Eh?!  He didn’t tell you?  Then I’ll tell you.  They’re family heirlooms you know!  There are actually a few set of heirloom engagement rings but that set is always for the first born!  They’ve been passed down to the first born for generations.”

“So they’re priceless heirlooms?” Kame gulped.

“Well, yes I suppose so.  Akanishi Jin, we named Jin after him, who was the original creator of AJ designed them for his future wife.  He was young when he fell in love with her and he wanted to prove to her father that he could successful without his father’s money so he set off to make a name for himself.  He was supposed to have done very well for himself after five or so years and so when the time came he commissioned his top jeweler on staff to create the rings to his exact specifications.  Once they were completed he went back to gain permission to marry her.  Ah… Hitoshi tells the story much more romantically than I do I’m afraid.  But I’m so happy you’ll be an official member of our family soon!  We’re going to be back in Japan in two weeks so we’ll have to celebrate!”

“Of course, I’d love that.  I can’t believe Jin never told me the story,” he smiled, “ah, I should get heading home; we’re just finished at the school.”

“Of course darling, I’ll see you soon.  Love you,” she answered.

“See you soon,” he replied warmly before hanging up.

As soon as he grabbed his bag to leave he went to grab his ring.  He blinked when he couldn’t find the ring anywhere on his desk.

“Holy shit!” Kame exclaimed, “No, no, no!” He began to search through his desk.

“What’s wrong?” Junno rushed over.

“The ring, it’s not here!” Kame cried, frantically moving papers and folders.

“Seriously?  I’ll help you look!” Junno immediately began his own search.

[One Hour Later]

“Go home Junno, I’ll keep looking.  You’re already here way past time,” Kame sighed, collapsing to the floor.

“But Kame…” Junno started.

“Go home, you need to see Rena, right?” Kame smiled lightly, “I’ll stay and look, I lost it after all.”

“I guess,” Junno sighed, “Call me once you find it, ok?”

“Of course,” Kame watched him go.

He continued to tear the room apart, completely messing up the once pristine classroom.

Jin walked into the apartment and frowned at the completely black apartment.

“Maybe he’s napping?” he mumbled, checking to see it was already seven-thirty.

He checked the bedroom and frowned at the empty room.

“He must be at the school?” he mused aloud, hitting his speed dial.

He frowned when he got Kame’s voicemail and decided to drive over and see if he was really running that late.

[Kindergarten]

Kame sat, surrounded by toys and stuffed animals, “I can’t believe I lost a priceless heirloom!” he shouted.

He furiously swiped at his eyes, frustrated at the upset tears sliding down his cheeks.

“Jin is going to be so angry, so, so angry,” he cried and curled up, resting his forehead on his knees, “of all the things to lose it had to be my fucking engagement ring.  I can’t believe that bastard never told me the story, I would’ve been so much more careful!”

He jumped when the door opened.

“Kazu?” Jin called quietly, eyes wide at the state of the classroom.

Kame looked up surprised, “J-Jin?”

“What happened?  Did someone break in?” Jin slowly weaved his way around all the toys.

“No,” Kame groaned covering his face again.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Jin sat down next to Kame, leaning against his shoulder, “I was worried when you weren’t home and didn’t leave any message.”

“I lost it, Jin.  I LOST IT!” Kame shook Jin by the shoulders.

“Your sanity?  Cause I can believe that at the moment,” Jin joked, “What did you lose?”

“The ring,” Kame whispered, “I lost one of your family heirlooms!”

“You what!” Jin yelled in shock before clamping his hands over his mouth.

Kame burst into new tears, misinterpreting Jin’s volume as anger, “I’m sorry!  I’m such a horrible lover.  I can’t believe I lost something like that,” he continued to wipe at his red cheeks.

“Kazu,” Jin sighed, he pulled the handkerchief from his suit pocket and used it to gently wipe the tears off, “stop crying Kazu, I’m not angry.  I was just shocked, I didn’t mean to shout at you.”

“And your mum called, she was so happy that you proposed and that I said yes.  She wants me to call her mum, Jin.  MUM!” Kame exclaimed, “And your father was supposed to be super happy too, and now they’re going to hate me!”

“No one’s going to hate you,” Jin stroked the wisps of hair on Kame’s neck.

“Yes, you will!” Kame hit his own head, “I’m such an idiot.  And YOU!  How could you NOT tell me about the story?!  I thought It was just something you had designed yourself, not some priceless heirloom that can’t be replaced!” he started to hit his head with the heel of his hands.

“Hey, stop that,” Jin grabbed his wrists, “It’s just a ring, Kazu.  I can have another one made, so stop doing this.  It’ll be ok.  I’m not going to hate you for losing some ring, and my parents are definitely not going to hate you.”

“JUST a RING?  Some ring?!” Kame repeated, resisting the urge to hit his lover, “That- that’s ridiculous!” he couldn’t resist the new tears starting to pour down his face, “I can’t believe I did this.  I’m going to have to commit suicide, I mean…”

“Shut up,” Jin snapped Kame’s attention back to him, “Look.  You are much more important than a ring, I don’t care if it’s a priceless, one of a kind, or whatever story is behind it.  You are not going to be hated, I am not going to break up with you over a ring, my parents will understand, and you are NOT going to commit suicide.  I don’t care how important that ring is, it’s not more important than you, so calm down.”

“Jin,” Kame couldn’t help but hug the other man, “Why are you so sappy?”

“Because one of us has to be, and you definitely aren’t,” Jin chuckled, pulling the smaller man closer, “Look.  Maybe you just need a fresh pair of eyes, I’ll help.”

“I’ve already searched everywhere, it’s no use,” Kame buried his face in Jin’s shoulder.

Jin frowned and looked around from his spot and blinked, “Um… Kazu, are you sure you looked everywhere?”

“Yes,” Kame started to cry again.

“Calm down, come on,” Jin pecked him on the cheek before crawling between the toys and over to the desk.  He fished out a stuffed animal turtle that had bounced under the desk.  He smiled and picked up the lightly shining ring, “look everything is ok.”

He crawled over to the crying Kame and slipped the ring on his finger, “now sit here, I’m going to clean up all these toys.”

“No, let me help,” Kame made to get up before Jin pushed him down.

“Sit here,” Jin insisted, “You look exhausted.”

[Half an Hour Later]

“See everything is ok Kazu darling,” Jin smiled brightly.

“Except for that fact that I almost lost a priceless ring, I was super late coming home.  And it’s already past eight and we haven’t eaten,” Kame moaned.

“I’ll call our favorite restaurant,” Jin amended, “I’m sure they’ll do me a favor and give us a table without a reservation.  It’ll make you feel better.”

“I don’t want to go eat there with rumpled clothing, paint stains, red eyes, and all in all I just look like shit right now, Jin,” Kame sighed, resting his head against the window, happy he hadn’t driven to work that morning.

“I’m sure they’ll do me a favor and make it to go, even if they normally wouldn’t,” Jin consoled, pulling out his phone and dialing the number.

Kame continued to sniffle miserably while Jin started a conversation, “such an idiot, idiot.  You couldn’t get more stupid Kazu,” he mumbled.

“Don’t say that Kazu, you’re still perfectly intelligent, everyone has their moments,” Jin leaned over and pecked him on the cheek, “yeah it’s been one of those days, so is it ok?” he asked the other line.

“You’re just making me feel worse,” Kame complained.

“Then what can I do to make you feel better?” Jin asked, “sorry not you.  Oh that’s perfect thank you.”

“Confirm that I’m an idiot and shouldn’t have let that happen,” Kame suggested, watching Jin close his phone.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” Jin sighed, “Akira said he’d even have the food delivered, we don’t even have to stop to get it.”

Kame grunted in response and Jin sighed before turning to go towards their apartment.

“Look,” he placed his free hand on Kame’s knee, “it’s not the end of the world.  And we found it in the end, that’s all the matters.  No one even has to know this ever happened, alright?”

“Alright,” Kame grudgingly agreed, “don’t give me anymore heirlooms.”

“I’m not going to promise that,” Jin smiled, “there’s a perfect wedding band set that would look amazing with your complexion,” he brushed a strand of Kame’s hair to reveal the troubled face, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Kame relented, “just tell me when you give me something that can’t be replaced because of sentimental reasons.”
