[Chapter 4]
He jerked roughly out of sleep when a loud ringing resonated through his room. Kame blindly searched for the source of the offensive ringing and finally closed his hand around his cell phone.
“Kamenashi,” he muttered.
“Kame, it’s nearly ten-thirty, don’t tell me you were still sleeping,” the voice of his best friend floated through the phone.
“Morning Tat-chan,” Kame groaned and sat up in bed.
“So you were. Even on your days off you don’t normally sleep in. Out late partying?” Ueda paused, “By the way, have you met the infamous Ayame yet?”
“How would he know that?” Kame’s eyes shot open, “What makes you ask that?”
“I’ll take that as a yes,” Ueda chuckled, “How do you think she got your number?”
Kame blinked and then briefly remembered how he was told it must have been Ayame who had acquired his phone number for Jin.
“How would she know to contact you?” He was confused, “You’re not in that industry… how would…”
“I’m dating one of her best friends,” He could almost hear Ueda rolling his eyes, “I did tell you I was dating a girl named Izza…”
“I didn’t think you meant… how did you even meet?” Kame asked incredulously.
“I helped her to the hospital and then bandaged her arm for her,” Ueda said slowly, “Are all runway models that clumsy?”
“Before yesterday I would have said no… but I have since learned that four top models are incredibly clumsy outside of work,” Kame sighed, remembering all the times Jin had stumbled over his own feet.
“Oh that’s nothing, you should see Ayame walking around when she’s not in high heels. I’ve never seen someone so clumsy in a pair of flats before,” Ueda grinned lightly.
“So you’ve met her friends? And you didn’t tell me Tat-chan?” Kame frowned.
“Only just on Friday!” Ueda hurriedly assured him, “You had that sudden trip for work and I figured with how your boss is you’d be exhausted. Besides we only started… dating a few weeks ago. She was also afraid of me meeting some of her friends, apologized for them about a million times beforehand. Though they didn’t do anything to particularly warrant such apologies… They did grill me, but that’s understandable. I’m dating their… ‘baby’ as they put it. I had been afraid that they were absolute monsters with the way she was going on.”
“I got a, ‘they’re a bit intense,’ apology after the fact,” muttered Kame, “I think for me it was more about how… clingy and open they are though.”
“Who are you talking about Kazu? And who was the one apologizing?”
“Ah! I forgot I haven’t told you, just yesterday was a bit… hectic,” Kame quickly launched into an explanation of the events leading up to the previous day and then went into detail about his afternoon with the model.
His eyes widened lightly, “Crap, I still have to go through all my designs.”
“That shouldn’t take you too long to decide though, right?” Ueda sounded doubtful, “That Akanishi sounds a bit… scattered. First you bump into him, he finds your designs, and then he has the audacity to actually sew them? Then he manages to offer you this kind of opportunity. It’s amazing Kazu but he seems a bit…”
“Out there?” Kame asked as he started sifting through the designs for the challenge.
“I was just going to say weird, and or crazy…”
“Be nice, he is a bit forward I guess…” He soon has the other twenty-two designs sitting out on his floor and started immediately eliminating some of the designs, “I thought you met her friends…”
“Not all of them, but what’s with that comment?” Ueda asked, Kame heard light typing from the other line.
“Well I’m surprised Jin hasn’t given you a speech about your intentions yet or something,” Kame said offhandedly, “You are dating one of his best friends.”
“That playboy is good friends with Izza?” Ueda had stopped typing completely.
“Tat-chan… you’re talking about someone’s who has been her friend for fifteen years, I wouldn’t say that around her,” Kame warned, not sure if he was saying it because of Izza or himself.
“Don’t try to defend him just yet Kazu,” Ueda muttered, “Even I hear all the stories about him in the press. Make sure not to fall for the idiot, playboy of a model.”
“Yes mum,” Kame sighed while rolling his eyes, “So what have you been up to?”
“Nothing much, just doing patient rotations and all that.” Ueda said simply, “Want to join Izza and I for lunch? I think she’s wanted to meet you… plus I think she’s invited another friend and it’ll help balance out.”
“What time?”
“We were going to meet at twelve, my favorite patisserie,” Ueda responded.
“I take it she’s a fan of sweets like you?” Kame laughed lightly.
Ueda grinned, “She is. It’s nice that she doesn’t watch every little thing she eats, even if she is a model. I doubt she’s ever gained weight because of it. So should I expect you there?”
“Sure, I’m almost done picking out designs… I just have to figure out what fabrics to use…” Kame trailed off.
“I’ll leave you to your work then. I’ll see you later Kazu,” Ueda hung up.
Kame sighed and instantly began jotting down notes on the sketches. Though he already had colors recorded down he decided to go into what fabrics, specific tones of colors, and about how much he guessed would be needed, “Jin will probably have to adjust the amounts,” he mumbled uncertainly.
Eventually he finished and went to get dress and hurriedly drove to meet Ueda and his girlfriend at the patisserie. He glanced at the clock, “Shit I’m late.”
He arrived five minutes late and spotted his friend easily and ran up and took the fourth seat, “I’m sorry Tat-chan, I lost track of time.”
Ueda smiled lightly but the girl answered first, “It’s alright, five minutes is nothing to apologize for. Kamenashi Kazuya, right?” She smiled brightly at him.
“Everything about her is so… cute and adorable,” Kame shook his head to rid himself of the thought, “Izza right?” He asked quietly.
She nodded enthusiastically, “I’ve wanted to meet you for a while now but,” she was cut off by another figure slipping into the seat opposite her.
“Sorry!” the man apologized, “The fitting ran long.”
Kame’s eyes widened and he shifted his gaze to his neighboring seat to find Jin sitting there.
“Don’t worry about it, Kazu just got here too,” Ueda assured him, eyeing the model carefully.
“Kazu…” Jin shifted his attention and smiled brightly, “I didn’t know you’d be here Kazu!”
“It was a bit last minute,” Kame mumbled sheepishly.
Izza seemed to put two and two together, coming up with four, “Ah! Sorry it took me a minute to realize who you are! You’re the one who designed the two pieces Midori and Ayame love, yeah? Jin’s helping you with the rest, aren’t you Jin? You had better if you promised to,” she glanced at Jin.
Kame fidgeted lightly, “Yes, but I feel kind of bad. I’m sure Jin didn’t mean to tie himself to this obligation.”
Jin frowned lightly but Izza continued talking.
“Don’t worry about him, he wants to. Couldn’t stop talking about your talent,” Izza poked Jin in the cheek and received a glare back, “Here, Kazu, I’ll help you choose a sweet to order,” She bounced up out of her seat and tugged on Kame’s arm.
When they reached the display her eyes widened, “Sorry I didn’t mean to call you that! I hear Ueda call you that all the time, and then Jin started… even Midori and Ayame referred to you like that.”
“It’s ok, you’re free to call me that if you want,” Kame chuckled at how innocent and adorable she was, “So what do you suggest?”
Izza’s eyes lit up again and she began pointing things out.
“How long have you been dating Izza?” Jin asked, slightly distracted as he glanced to make sure Izza was still at the display.
“It’s been almost a month.” Ueda said, he knew what was coming because of Kame.
Jin sighed, “Don’t look so worried I’m not going to hurt you or something. The girls already approved of you, therefore I’ll trust you with our Izza baby. If you hurt her though you’ll have to answer to me,” Jin leveled him with a serious look.
Ueda sighed in relief, “Of course, if I ever do hurt her I want you to do something about it.”
“Good answer,” Jin said right before Izza and Kame started to make their way back to the table.
“I ordered your favorite, Jin,” Izza smiled lightly and sat back down.
Jin flashed her a smile, “So you’re a doctor?” Jin started.
“Yeah,” Ueda nodded, “I’m a cardiologist.”
Jin nodded lightly, “How do you know Kazu?”
“Our parents are great friends,” Kame supplied with a smile.
Jin nodded but then tilted his head, “how old are you?”
“Jin, that’s too blunt!” Izza pouted.
Ueda waved his hand, “It’s fine. Thirty.”
Jin blinked, “So eight years older than Izza… wait… how old are you Kazu?” He immediately began to question.
Kame tilted his head, “Eh? Oh! Right, twenty-four…”
Izza smiled lightly, watching the interaction between the two men. She scooped up another mouthful of her parfait and asked, “How did you two meet? I haven’t been able to get anything from Midori, she never stops talking, and Aya won’t talk to anyone until her papers are done… unless it’s an emergency.”
“Ah, well… there was a Marc Jacobs show the other night, I was there for work and Jin was one of the models,” Kame quietly answered, averting his eyes to the window.
“I ran into him afterwards, his design sketches went flying all over the place so of course I helped him… but some got left behind, and I didn’t see them until after he left. I tried calling his office but that horrible secretary told me was out of time,” Jin pulled a face while mentioning the secretary. “I got Aya to get me his cell number, but I didn’t want to call during his work. And while I was waiting I just felt that I had to make the two designs. You have to see them Izza-baby, you’ll love them just as much as we did.”
“I’m sure I will Jin,” Izza grinned and looked at the time, “Ah! I’m sorry, I have to run. Aya and I have a photo shoot together today.”
“For what?” Jin tilted his head, “She mentioned something like that last night…”
Izza smiled, “Different shoot, that was early this morning. Shame I was out of town until late last night or I would’ve loved seeing the designs!” she smiled broadly at Kame but turned to kiss Ueda on the cheek, “I have to get going, I’ll see you later tonight, we’re still on for dinner right?”
“Of course,” Ueda smiled and checked his phone, “I need to get going too, the hospital will be expecting me back soon.” He put enough money on the table, “Have fun working on the collection,” he offered before he and Izza walked out.
Both sat behind, quietly finishing their sweets. Kame kept stealing glimpses at the happily munching Jin. His eyes widened at the epitome of a future sugar coma inducing creation before him.
“Are you… allowed to eat that?” Kame asked warily, staring at the mass of chocolate, wafers, ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, and any other number of cavity inducing sweets.
“What do you mean?” the model asked before scooping another heaping spoonful into his mouth.
“Just well…” Kame watched as yet another bite disappeared, “That’s pure sugar, kind of horrifying in the prospect of eating it, and…” Kame trailed off for a few moments.
“It’ll make me fat?” Jin provided after a pause before smiling when the other flushed brightly, “This just means an extra hour…” he glanced at the dish, “or three at the gym this week.” He happily popped another spoonful into his mouth.
Kame looked awkwardly down at his own, simple parfait, “And I was complaining inwardly about the weight I would gain from this…”
“You?” Jin poked Kame’s side, making the other jump in surprise, “if anything you could do to gain some weight… or some more muscle at least. You should come to the gym with me sometime.”
Kame frowned, “Put on weight?”
“Yes, put on weight,” Jin chuckled, “Looks like you could use this more than I could,” he scooped an overflowing spoonful of his parfait and held it out expectantly.
“Ha?” Kame responded dumbly.
“Eat it,” Jin pushed the spoon towards Kame’s face, careful not to drip any on the other’s outfit.
“You’re serious?” Kame quirked an eyebrow, only to receive a narrowed look in response. He sighed and finally took the offered bite.
Jin looked at him expectantly until he swallowed.
“That…” Kame wrinkled his nose, “How do you eat that? It’s too sweet!”
Jin frowned, “Because having the time to sit down and eat something this decadent isn’t particularly often,” he shrugged, “typically we eat at someone’s place, and Aya’s desserts… delicious but wholly not sugary enough. This is going to be my only chance to eat something like this for some time…” he sighed and looked at his phone, “we’d better get going.”
“Finish your parfait,” Kame frowned, “If you’re that sad about not being able to eat things like this, finish it. We can spare a few minutes for you to eat it. My designs aren’t running away, nor are the fabric stores going to close this early.” He took another bite of his own parfait, “Go on,” he urged when Jin looked doubtful.
Jin beamed, “I knew you were awesome, this cements it,” he sang before happily digging back in.
Kame chuckled, scooping up the strawberry from his own and popping it in his mouth, “Ah! Do you want to see the designs we’re going to use? That is… if you approve of them. I brought all of them in case you didn’t think a few would work or… well I mean you know Ryo better than I do and his preferences so…”
“Stop rambling,” Jin poked Kame’s forehead with a smile, “I’m sure the ones you chose will be perfect. But let me see, let me see!” he prompted, his eyes lighting up.
“So there is the first one,” Kame fished the portfolio from his messenger bag, “Luckily I had it in here already. Ok, the first one,” he pulled out a sheet.
Jin took the sketch shoved in his direction, pushing his parfait aside for a moment, “Your calculations for fabric is a bit off, not too bad though. I love the stitching on this.”
Kame flushed again, “I-I kind of figured I would be wrong, I just thought giving you my estimate might help you a might, sorry. It probably just…”
“Just stop talking,” Jin grinned, “I don’t mind, you’re not too far off. I should probably teach you how to figure these out… now where’s the next one.”
Kame excitedly handed the next two over, “I think Midori would really like these two.”
Jin smiled, “Definitely, we should reserve these for her, unless she finds another two she likes better…”
“That’s if Ryo lets me debut, he has to like it after all. He might not, I heard he’s super picky…” Kame nibbled on his bottom lip nervously.
“Believe me, once you have Aya on your side you have Ryo’s approval,” Jin winked conspiratorially, “Ne… why did you ask if they were still together? Before I mean?”
Kame blushed again, “Ah-ah well I mean… my boss always says, ‘It’d be a miracle if they last another week’. Says it about Midori and Pi too…”
“Matsumoto?” Jin wrinkled his nose in distaste, “He would say something like that. Well he’s wrong on both counts. They’re in it for the long-run I think,” he chuckled, “And Ryo is definitely not going to allow his muse go to another man without a fight,” he scooped more of his parfait up and practically groaned, “Ooh brownie chunks are the best! Anyways, and Midori and Pi? They’re just too perfect for each other.” He dropped his spoon into the empty dish, “You ready to go?”
“Yeah of course,” He sulked as he was once again beaten to pulling out his wallet and throwing money down.
[One Week Later]
“Kame!” Jin called from the sewing room, “KAME?!”
Kame came running into the room, apron still tied around his waist, “What’s wrong?” he asked worriedly.
Jin smiled, “Ah! You look so cute! Where’s my camera?”
“No camera! What did you call me for?” Kame frowned, fumbling to undo the knot of the apron.
“Just wanted to know what you were doing…” Jin admitted sheepishly, “it’s too quiet!”
Kame sighed and flopped to sit on the floor, “What did I say about interrupting me while I’m cooking?”
“Only do it if I need something?” Jin pouted.
“Exactly.” Kame said.
“But you shouldn’t be cooking,” Jin sighed, resisting the urge to hit his head on the sewing machine.
“We discussed this,” Kame frowned, “it’s not as if I’m doing much of anything while you’re sewing, and you’re doing all this work I have to do something!”
“Fiine!” Jin pouted, “What are you cooking?” He looked at the clock, “It’s almost time for dinner.”
“It’s a surprise, got the recipe from Ryo and Aya,” Kame trailed off, “Now, you don’t need anything?”
“I guess not,” Jin pouted, hoping it would get the other to stay.
“Good,” Kame smiled and left the room.
[Three Days Later]
Kame slipped into the elevator and just as the doors began to close he heard, “Can you hold that?”
He put his hand in the doorway and his eyes widened with Ayame rushed in, “Thanks Kazu darling!” she chirped. She eyed the grocery bags in his hands, “Need help?” she gestured to the single bag she was carrying.
“No, I’m fine,” He smiled, “Visiting Jin?”
“Nope,” Ayame gave him an odd look, “I just had work with him a couple hours ago. You’re visiting pretty late.”
“I feel bad, he’s doing almost all of the hard work,” Kame sighed, “Then what are you doing here?”
“I live here,” She smiled.
“EH?!” Kame dropped one of his bags.
“Jin has one side of the top floor, I have the other? Well I guess you never have seen me come in,” She sighed dramatically, “I’m hurt darling,” she pouted heavily at him.
“Sorry, sorry,” He sighed, “Jin never mentioned it, and I spend my time holed up in the kitchen making him food.”
“You can cook?” Her eyes lit up, “Can I join you both?”
“Sure,” he tilted his head, “Will you help me make dessert?”
“Of course!” She cheered and stepped out when the elevator opened. She pulled out a card and flashed it in front of the reader and Jin’s door clicked open, “Jin darling! I come bearing prettiness!”
Jin rubbed his eye and walked to the foyer, “I didn’t expect you over tonight… Kazu too? It’s just my lucky night, isn’t it?”
“Of course, you not only get prettiness for company, but you get double the pretty for the price of one!” Ayame exclaimed, tugging Kame behind her to the kitchen, “We’re going to cook! You go back to sewing, or whatever you were doing. How many pieces have you both finished?” she directed the last part to Kame.
“We’ve finished two for the most part. I just have to get the trimmings all sorted out. A few buttons here and there.” Kame explained.
“I’m so proud of you,” Ayame smiled.
“What about me? I’ve almost finished the third piece,” Jin pouted adorably.
“You know I’ll love you regardless of what you do, unless you ditch Kame in the middle of his collection. Then I have to convince Ryo, or someone else who can sew, to help him finish and I only have so many connections. Now go away, we have to cook!” Ayame declared.
“Stay away from the stove, Aya!” Jin warned before he skipped back to the other room.
Half an hour later someone starting pounding on the door before it clicked open.
“How much company am I going to have tonight?” Jin groaned, and blinked when he saw Midori pouting unhappily at him, “Mi-chan! Whatcha doing here?”
“I’m moving out,” Midori proclaimed, loud enough to travel through the whole apartment, “I know you’re here, Aya!”
“You’re what?” Ayame shouted, walking out with an apron tied on, “What happened? Did you break up? Have you figured out where you’re going to stay? You can have my guestroom if you need it.”
“It’s not permanent,” Midori frowned, “And we didn’t break up! He’s just being stupid.”
Jin frowned, “What’s going on Mi?”
“We were arguing over something stupid, and then somehow it got to him saying, ‘You couldn’t even come close to going a month without sex!’. And am I going to back out of a challenge like that? HELL NO!”
Kame’s eyes widened, “So you’ve moved out? Are you sure that’s… ok?”
Midori pouted, “I’m moving in with Aya for the time being, my stuff is in the hall. Can you help me get it in? I left the key to your apartment back at my place.”
“Of course, how many bags do you have?” Jin asked.
Midori bit her lip, “Uh… well… I may have recruited your doorman to help me bring them up.”
“Let’s go help,” Kame suggested, “Do you want to join us for dinner, Midori?”
“Really?” Midori smiled brightly, “I’d love to!”
“Midori!” Ayame called from the hallway, “I can’t even get to my door! You don’t need this much stuff!”
“But… they’re mainly my shoes! And my jewelry!” Midori complained, “you can borrow my shoes!” she offered.
“And your necklaces,” Ayame pouted.
“Deal,” Midori held out her hand and shook with a smile.
[One Week Later]
“Kame, Kame, Kame~” Jin called out happily.
“Whaa… ouch!” Kame asked but pricked hit finger on the needle he was holding, “Fuck, Jin where do you keep the first aid kit?” He grabbed a tissue and pressed it to the wound.
“Eh?” Jin ran over and grabbed his hand, “This was why I didn’t want you sewing on buttons… do I have a first aid kit?” he mused aloud, “How deep did you manage to prick yourself?” He asked, alarmed at the amount of blood.
“I don’t know, and you don’t have a first aid kit?” Kame exclaimed, “What do you do when you hurt yourself!?”
Jin frowned, “I call Aya. Now call Aya and ask!”
Kame made a grab for his cell phone and jumped when he felt Jin take his finger into his mouth, “What are you doing?”
“I always do this when I hurt my finger! Now make the call!”, Jin exclaimed.
A few minutes later Ayame rushed in, Midori trailing behind with the giant first aid kit.
“Oh, interrupting something?” Midori smirked.
Kame turned bright red and Jin frowned, “No, where are the bandages?”
“You’re so cute,” Midori pinched Kame’s cheek.
Ayame opened the giant case and pulled out a Hello Kitty Angel bandage and a few other things, “Let go of his finger you idiot,” She sighed and tugged Kame over to her.
Moments later he had a powder blue themed kitty bandage on his finger, “Thanks Aya.”
“No problem,” She smiled and looked around, “Eh… what’s all this stuff?” She looked around at all the luggage pushed to one side of the large room.
“I made Kame bring some stuff over here, he’s been staying until like three in the morning, there’s no point in him driving all the way home after that. Besides I closer to his job anyway when that happens,” Jin explained.
“You’re here almost every day,” Midori frowned, “What about your apartment?”
“It’s not like I ever did anything but sleep there,” Kame frowned, “That reminds me, I have to go on a trip for work in a week.”
“Aww how long?” Jin pouted, “It’s going to be boring without you, do you haave to go?” Jin whined.
“Yes, I have to go,” Kame rolled his eyes, “And it’s only three days, will you be ok without me here?”
“Well, I’ll actually probably get more done without you here,” Jin admitted.
Kame glared, “What is that supposed to mean?”
“You’re just too pretty. It always distracts me,” Jin complimented with a cheeky grin.
Kame threw a shoe a Jin.
“Don’t worry about Jin, I’ll make sure he eats,” Ayame rolled her eyes.
♪Finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress, Last man on the earth still couldn’t hit this♪
“I swear… if you don’t change that ringtone I am going to murder you!” Ayame screamed at Midori, “You have played that song, CONSTANTLY for the past week. I can’t take it anymore!”
“Make me!” Midori yelled, ducking out of the apartment.
“You little!” Ayame ran out after her.
Kame blinked, “Is that normal?”
“Very much so,” Jin shrugged, “Ah, bathroom,” he walked off into the other room.
Jin smiled at his bathroom, slowly but surely through the past week his soaps and products had been pushed a little to the side to allow for Kame’s own to be placed on shelves. He had to admit, he very much enjoyed the strawberry scent hanging around in the air.
[End of the First Month]
Kame tugged his suitcase tiredly out of the elevator and down the hall a bit. He frowned at the door and fumbled around in his wallet, he allowed himself a slight moment of celebration when he found the extra card key he had been given and opened the door.
“Good evening,” he called out exhaustedly.
“Okaeri~” Jin called, running happily into the room, wide awake even though it was well past midnight, “Eh? Are you ok?” He looked at the suitcase, “Did you even go home?”
“Too far,” Kame whined, “I don’t want to drive all the way home, do you mind if I sleep here for the night?”
“Of course not!” Jin attached himself to Kame’s arm and tugged him in further, “Give me your suitcase!” he took the younger boys suitcase and dragged it into the sewing room, “You can sleep in my bed if you want, I’m going to be up all night.”
“But…” Kame started to protest.
“Nope, go to sleep. I finished the fourth piece while you were gone, but check it in the morning. You need sleep and I need to clean up a bit… I pretty much destroyed the kitchen while you were gone,” Jin grinned and shoved the other towards the bathroom; “I’ll bring you some clothes!” he called after shutting the door.
Kame frowned at the shower. “When has my life become so chaotic? And when did I adapt to it?” he mused as he stared at all his products lined up perfectly, in order of size and type just like Jin’s were on the other side of the faucet.
“Is Kame back yet?” He heard Midori call from the hall, “You’ve been up all night waiting and I thought I heard the door!”
“Shower,” Jin answered, Kame could just imagine the pout, “And I wasn’t waiting up all night for him!” The other whined.
“Right, right,” Midori must have been rolling her eyes, “Aya told me to come tell you both we’re having dinner at Ryo’s on Sunday, he wants to hear about your progress.”
“Alright, now go away,” Jin ushered her out of his apartment and then knocked on the bathroom door, “Hey your pajamas are right here, go to sleep after you finish, alright? You looked exhausted.”
“Thanks,” He called back before looking in the mirror again, “I wouldn’t mind it staying this way,” he mumbled.
